Capsule Out of Time An Industrial Relic in West Virginia Julia Solis 9781634991094 Books Reviews

  • If you visit a place for a day you are automatically an expert on the place. If you spend a weekend there you are entitled to write a newspaper article about it. If you spend two weeks there, you definitely earned the privilege to write a book about it.
In my opinion those truisms do not apply to Julia Solis' work. Through her articles, commentaries and her books I have followed her no-nonsense excursions, her in-depth explorations. And I have always been grateful for her ability to open our blinkers to the beauty we usually miss on the way to our daily work.

In her writing and photography you feel the passion, the curiosity, the seriousness and the respect for her subjects.

Her newest book is a prime example.
  • Although this book explores the industrious past of a small decaying town, it is refreshingly unlike any "Images of America" or "ghost town" series. Solis takes us into the dripping basements and decaying rooms of the town's storefronts and homes through many wonderful photos, then leads us into even more mysterious places in our minds with her writing. She considers us to ponder what really consists of a ghost town and what potential these ruinous buildings could have in their current state, while also making your hair stand on end navigating through an arson-ravaged home and other forbidding places. Highly recommended!
  • As always, Julia's photographs are alternately haunting, magnificent, and puzzling -- sometimes all three at once. Her mission is to explore the liminal spaces others leave behind, and she comes back with astounding stories. Her ability to connect disparate moments, scenes and structures is unparalleled. I always enjoy he books, and this is no exception.
