A Nefarious Engagement A Regency Cozy Beatrice HydeClare Mysteries Book 4 edition by Lynn Messina Romance eBooks Reviews

  • I found Bea a week ago and have joyfully read all 4 of this series and two of the Harlow books as well. It's remarkable when a writer takes a genre that's rife with so much formula and comes up with something fresh. Bea may not be an Incomparable but she is an Original. The best thing for me, about this book, (not much of a SPOILER alert) is when Bea has a moment in the carriage where she senses that what she's about to do is wrong and I waited for her to do it anyway. I love the character development in this one. The developments with her family were surprising and wonderful. I just loaded the series on my mom's . Thank you Lynn for a smart, funny, witty clean read (really, I don't need to be in anyone's boudoir with them) and a heroine I love.
  • The other books in this series are charming and full of witty dialogue, especially between the Heroine Bea and the drill Duke of Kesgrave. The Duke makes only brief appearances at the beginning and the end of the story, which unfortunately highlights how unsatisfactory a character Bea is without him. A large part of the plot is taken up with Bea plodding investigation of her parents' death. This proves to be slow-moving, sad, and tedious. A bit of jarring 21st sensibilities also enters here. Bea worries about losing her independence by marrying a vastly wealthy aristocrat who is enamored of her even though she now lives as a charity case with her miserly and toxic relatives. The trundling plot also takes her to a political salon ostensibly to question a lead but mostly to comment on men's unwillingness to listen to women's opinions. (Since I'd guess 99 per cent of Ms. Messina's readers are women this seems like preaching to the choir.) In addition, it turns out Bea's mother was a great intellect who wrote a brilliant treatise on Sexual Equality. And this is a Regency Romance? Happily, this series is part of Unlimited so I'm ready to give the next book a quick scan before I commit as much time as I did to this story. If you enjoyed Ms. Messina's fun and clever writing her boxed set Love Takes Root is a pleasant way to pass several hours.
  • This is book 4 of the Beatrice-Hyde Clare mysteries. I didn’t enjoy it as much as the other three because Kesgrave was rarely in it. The explanation for his absence is revealed towards the ending and I liked it very much. I just couldn’t give it 5 stars though, because I really missed the interaction and humor between the two.
  • I do really enjoy these stories, but having read them back-to-back, the re-telling of all the previous stories, inside jokes, and thoughts, etc. is tedious. Thus the four star instead of five rating. Very repetitious. I would recommend just telling the new tale with minimal references to previous info. The Duke is the ideal man, and the way each pokes fun at the other in a sarcastic , tongue-in-cheek way is fun to read because their affection is so evident.
  • I tried to slow myself down but I devoured this book as soon as sent it through. It was like Christmas in April and I was not disappointed.

I love how Messina writes the Bea-Damien dynamic. It's so warm, compelling and heart warming. They have fast become my favourite fictional pairing and I can't get them out of my head

This book is charming, romantic, funny - and has pathos. I am so glad I discovered this series and this author and book 5 simply cannot come soon enough. In the interim I think I will just have to keep re-reading the first four novels and writing fan fic!

The slow burn the author has written for these two characters is wonderful and while I agonised when Bea and Kesgrave were apart for a period of time - it made the moments they were together all the more satisfying. I can't recommend this series enough!
  • Disappointing. Because our heroine decides to take this case on by herself, for reasons not entirely relatable, there is little of the sparkling, and hilarious, conversation between her and the Duke that made the earlier books so charming. I am delighted, however, to see that this is not the end and look forward to a reversion to earlier format in the next installment.
  • As well as solving the mystery of her parents’ deaths, Bea and her beloved’s relationship takes another quantum leap. SPOILER ALERT But not before my heart was in my mouth worrying about whether Bea’s lack of self worth would cripple the chance of real trust growing. A delightful hero and heroine with a sharply delineated cast of characters.
  • The entire series thus far is quite good - fast paced with great characters and dialogue. I really enjoy Bea and her interactions with her family and the duke - witty!
